The Research centre for old age psychiatry, Innlandet Hospital trust, has a focus on research on dementia, depression, and anxiety in old age. It has conducted large cohort studies with patients receiving domiciliary care, patients in nursing homes and patients in old age psychiatry departments, focusing on the course of dementia, depression, and anxiety. In addition, the centre has been PI of two RCT on medication for dementia and one RCT for non-pharmacological treatment of dementia.

The Research centre is part of a department of old age psychiatry at a hospital covering approximately 50 000 people above 65 years. The hospital has 3 inpatient units (a SCU for dementia, a unit for work up and diagnosis of dementia and a unit for depression/anxiety). The Research centre has a close cooperation with the clinical wards, as well as nursing homes and domiciliary health care in the municipalities in the area.

The cooperation between the research centre, the old age psychiatry ward and the nursing homes in the area gives the Research centre the opportunity to do clinical research in hospital or nursing homes. The hospital runs an extensively outpatient clinic, and in addition to the SCU at the hospital the old age psychiatry department have 9 nurses going home to people with dementia or to nursing homes to start treatment there, or to teach and supervise the staff.
